Possible Book Covers

I am testing out different book covers for the collaborative series.  I'm playing with how prominent I want the image vs. text.

NOTE:  the black boxes are not borders, I just threw it on there to show page size.

For the book's intro...I think the dialogue Jay & I shared when I asked him to participate in the project is strong.  Instead of describing the project in first-person perspective, I am thinking of writing out the dialogue instead:

  1. Hey Meg,
Good exploration. I'm leaning toward #2 as a visual format.
My main thoughts are on the title and subtitle, and whether they are communicating exactly as you hope: the world as seen through Jay's eyes, the eyes of someone who is newly without a home, but with a camera. (Rather than a "what if" experiement from the vantage point of the reader/viewer.)
Hannah is great on this kind of thing (duh!) so let's loop her in on the discussion.

  2. Hey Meg,
Congratulations on your Doorknobs piece! That's a great accomplishment and it sounds fantastic.

I agree with Stephanie on both counts. I prefer the second visual format, it gives the picture more room to breathe and the viewer a better chance to understand what's going on. It really catches your eye the most. The title does not really tell me anything about the content of the book, which is what makes the pictures intriguing. And the subtitle seems to go against your goal of trying to give homeless people a face. That tagline sounds more along the lines of a reality tv sketch, and not the dynamic you're after. I would avoid using the phrase, "a homeless person," in your work. That makes it easier for people to think of homeless people as a stereotype image rather than getting them to think of them as individuals. Avoid labels; even the phrase "a person without a home" seems a bit more tender. The visual format of #2 looks great though.

Also, the dialogue for the intro sounds great from your end, but doesn't really give us a sense of his personality. In all of your interviews, he seems so chatty and really smart, but given his responses in that dialogue, he really could be anyone. Lead us to see him as an individual.
